Minute 0–5: choose one annoying task
Pick work that is repetitive, text-heavy, and easy for a human to review: drafting a customer follow-up, summarizing notes, turning bullet points into a social post, or organizing an intake message.
Avoid for your first test: medical, legal, safety, hiring, credit, insurance-coverage, or other high-stakes decisions.
Minute 5–10: define the finish line
Write down what “good” means before you prompt: correct facts, your tone, required fields, and the maximum time you are willing to spend reviewing the output.
Minute 10–20: run a controlled prompt
You are helping with a small-business task. Goal: [GOAL]. Context: [NON-SENSITIVE CONTEXT]. Produce [OUTPUT]. Requirements: [REQUIREMENTS]. If information is missing, ask up to three questions. Do not invent facts. End with a short review checklist.
Use sample or non-sensitive data until you have checked the tool's business privacy controls.
Minute 20–25: review like a supervisor
- Are names, dates, prices, promises, and policy statements correct?
- Did the AI add anything you did not provide?
- Would you be comfortable sending this under your business name?
Minute 25–30: measure the win
Record the old time, new time, number of corrections, and whether the result was actually usable. If the task works three times in a row, it is a candidate for a repeatable workflow.
